The Cheviot Holiday accommodation  overlooks the River Gannel Estuary which is approximately 11/4 miles long. The Estuarys highest point is at Trevemper bridge where boats used to unload their cargo and ends when it joins the sea at Crantock beach. The Estuary in earlier years was a hive of activity with boatyards for building and repair of sea going ships. Now an area partly owned by the National Trust it is a haven for wildlife, horse riding, walking and relaxing.

The River Gannel to Newquay Harbour Gig race photographed from Pentire as the boats enter Crantock bay .
The race starts at the Fernpit and proceeds at full tide out past Crantock beach  around Pentire head along Fistral bay into Newquay bay and finishes at the Newquay Harbour.
