The Cheviot Holiday
apartments overlook the River Gannel Estuary
which is approximately 11/4 miles long.
The Estuarys highest point is at Trevemper bridge where
boats used to unload their cargo,at its lowest end it joins the sea at Crantock beach.
Estuary in earlier years was a hive of activity with boat yards for building
and repair of sea going ships. Now an area partly owned by the National Trust
it is a haven for wildlife, horse riding, walking and relaxing.
The first picture shows the River Gannel to Newquay Harbour Gig race photographed from Pentire
headland as the
boats enter Crantock bay . The race starts at the Fernpit cafe and proceeds at full tide out past Crantock
beach around Pentire head along Fistral bay into Newquay bay and
finishes at the Newquay Harbour.
